A Stanley Cup parade in Rochester? That’s what Sabres President Ted Black is promising Rochster fans. Cool. I’m a Sabres fan too and want the Sabres to win a Stanley Cup and want to be a part of that celebration but there is another hockey team here in Rochester called the Amerks.
Once this sale goes through the promise better be that the priority for the Amerks to win a Calder Cup will be as high as the Sabres to win a Stanley Cup.
“I consider Rochester to be part of the Sabres nation,” Black said. “When we do win the Stanley Cup we will have a parade there, too.”
Will the Calder Cup be celebrated in Buffalo too?
Over the years through all the bullsh*t that has gone on with affiliation and ownership changes the idea of the Amerks being their own team seems to have been lost in the shuffle. The same can be said for many teams around the American Hockey League.
The Amerks were founded in 1956 and have won six Calder Cups. Those coming in 1964–65, 1965–66, 1967–68, 1982–83, 1986–87, and the most recent in 1995-1996.
Yes, the AHL is a development league but it’s also a league of it’s own where fans are a fan of the logo on the ice, not just the NHL affiliate. It’s great to hear the Amerks being mentioned more and more lately in conversations around town but let’s keep the identity of the Amerks as that of being Rochester’s team.
