Late in the second period Tim Conboy of the Binghamton Senators dropped Travis Turnbull of the Rochester Americans with a hit to the head that sent Turnbull to the ice and out of the game. Â Moments after the hit Joe Finley challenged Conboy and the two shared a couple of punches. Â Not sure why Finley took off skating backwards instead of just going at it where they were.
Turnbull slowly went off the ice and the game was over for him at that point. Â He went flying down to the ice, his helmet went in the air and his gloves were knocked off.
Earlier in the game towards the end of the first period they each received unsportsmanlike penalties for something but I didn’t see what happend. Â Did anyone see it? Â They didn’t appear to get along and Conboy got the hit in late in the game.
Conboy and Finley each received a five minute penalty for fighting and Conboy received a 10 minute match penalty for a “check to the head.” Â Here’s what the AHL rule book says about the call:
48.5 Match Penalty – The Referee, at his discretion, may assess a match penalty if, in his judgment, the player attempted to or deliberately injured his opponent with an illegal check to the head. Â If deemed appropriate, supplementary discipline can be applied by the President at his discretion (refer to Rule 28).
Ron Rolston said that the league would be reviewing the hit which you can see below.
What do you think? Â I think it’s safe to say Conboy will see a few games off the ice.
I’m against a lot of the “over calling” of penalties in the game, but this was a match penalty by definition. Turnbull had dished the puck and the hit was late. Plus conboy went full bore and had no intention of pulling up. should be a suspension. Finley needs fighting lessons.
