Quick recap of the Amerks win over the Bears..
First period started with both teams going back and forth for the first five minutes. Gongalsky had a few close chances early.
Dennis Persson on the power play created a great chance shooting from the face off dot trying to give Whitmore the chance to tip it in but Holtby got a glove on it. Amerks had some decent puck movement on the power play.
Bears scored first off what could be considered a fluke goal. The puck bounced in the air and David Leggio lost site of it and it bounced over him and in. Matt Pope was given credit.
Derek Whitmore tied the game 1-1 keeping his eye on a loose puck in front of the net and getting it in. Corey Tropp was to the side of the net battling for the puck and found a way to squeeze it to the front.
Nick Crawford blocked a shot in the Amerks zone and created a fast two on with Colin Stuart leading the play with Corey Tropp. Stuart sent the puck cross ice to Tropp who brought it across Holtby and buried it with a nice backhand.
Period ended with the Amerks leading 2-1.
Second….
Dennis Persson scored his second of the season from the left face off circle looking like a sniper picking the top left corner past Braden Holtby. Where’s that shot been all season?
Successful penalty kill with TJ Brennan in the box for elbowing. Prevented the Bears from creating a lot of space.
Marcus ‘Moose’ Foligno all alone in front of the net slips it five hole on Holtby. Whitmore battled two Bears behind the net to feed it to him.
As the second period was winding down Graham Mink drove Maxime Legault into the boards at the Amerks bench. The two exchanged words but neither appeared willing to fight and separated. When the buzzer sounded to end the period Graham Mink with two hands on his stick slashed Legault at the ankles. Legault went down and had to be helped down the tunnel.
Third period…
Phil Varone chased a puck in the neutral zone beating one of the Bears for it. Varone then had some fancy stick work to feed it to Corey Tropp who was able to bring it to his back hand again to put the Amerks up 5-1. Two goals scored in identical fashion.
Luke Adam went to the penalty box and sure enough the Bears scored. Graham Mink slipped one past Leggio in close.
With 10 minutes left in the period it makes one think where this Amerks team is every game. They’re certainly showing they can compete with the best. They’ve also played disciplined as well not giving in to the Bears physical play and taking any dumb penalties.
The Amerks continued to hold off the Bears in one of their best efforts of the season. Like last Friday, it’s one game and how they come out for the next one will be interesting.
